England, 1814

When Winifred is rescued from her snow-stranded carriage by the notorious and reclusive Alistair, Marquess of Coventry, she is instantly drawn to him. Jilted by her betrothed and socially ruined by untrue rumors, Winifred is tired of paying for crimes she didn't commit and decides to play the seductress London society claims she is. Thinking a night of passion shouldn't leave any lasting effects, she instead finds her heart marked forever.

Six years later, Alistair is working for the Regent as a spy. A search for Napoleon's English supporters leads him to the beguiling Winifred, recently widowed with a young son. He hasn't forgotten how the unconventional beauty warmed his bed, and the heat between them rekindles immediately. The spymaster is determined to uncover all of plucky Winifred's secrets. Especially the one regarding her son...

Kathie's Review:

For Her Spy Only is only 83 pages long. While it seemed a bit bare in places, it was still a very good read this afternoon. It's book two in the Masquerading Mistresses series by Robyn DeHart. The couple from the first book is mentioned here, but the book itself can stand alone.

Alistair is part of the Seven, a group of spies who work for the crown. He's...different. He's anti-social, thinks outside the box, didn't speak until he was like eight. His fellow spies know his value, and they don't believe the rumors about how he killed his first wife. Armchair analysis, he's on the autism spectrum. He's incredibly brilliant at breaking codes.

On a snowy winter's eve, he comes across Winifred in her broken carriage. He brings her and her maid (who she's sacked three times this week) into his home. Winifred has been jilted, at the altar no less. She's been scorned as a wanton and figures Alistair is hot, and why not live the life she's been labelled. At least until the carriage is fixed.

There's a time jump and Alistair needs some maps. He's shocked and surprised to find Winifred is the widow of the map maker...and she has a young son. Mystery and adventure ensue. And seduction, too.

I took a rating off for the modern language that was sprinkled throughout the novella. It was rather jarring to read modern words in this very Regency story.

Yes, a short story, but very readable with a very fast flow. I suggest it for those times when you want to read an entire story, but don't have a lot of free time. This one will satisfy. Also, I hope there are more in this series.
