London, 1815

Three London Seasons. Three Christmases come and gone. Jilted Sidony Harbeck is done waiting for the inconstant Captain Hale Martin to return. Despite their whispered adolescent promises, he never wrote her a single letter. Now the scoundrel has returned, professing his love and a thoughtless bet to woo her, but she only wants him to suffer.

After three years at sea, Hale finally has the means to marry his best friend's sister and the love of his life. But he only has three days to convince her of his devotion because he stupidly proposes a wager - he'll convince Sidony to marry him by Christmas or he'll leave her alone forever. When Hale sets out to seduce her, the stakes are raised by a passion so intense that Sidony must risk her heart no matter the odds.

Kathie's Review:

This is a very short novella, only about 63 pages. tells a whole story. A very nice way to spend your coffee break.

Sidony doesn't want to be waiting for Hale to return and fulfill the promises they shared. He promised so many things, including the promise of letters. Not a single one ever came her way. She's miffed, for sure.

For his part, the three years at sea were harder than anything he could have imagined. He hadn't wanted to burden her with words of loss and fear and storms.

They had shared wagers as young people, and on the spur of the moment he wagers she'll give into him before Christmas, or he'll leave. Again...idiot. While there isn't a lot of time, he starts wooing her to the best of his ability. They take up their intimate relations. They are good at that, but talking? Yes, they need to work on that.

While this isn't long, it was good. And I'll definitely read some of Ms. Lin's longer works!

* Thank you, NetGalley and Entangled, for the opportunity to read Letters at Christmas
