Ashlyn Macnamara weaves a delicious tale of two souls torn apart by circumstance and reunited by fate—perfect for fans of Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Sabrina Jeffries.
Henrietta Upperton is about to marry Alexander Sanford when he rushes off to India to salvage his family’s fortune. Then comes the devastating news that he has wed another. Eight agonizing years later, a storm washes Alexander ashore—injured, widowed, and hunted—and one glimpse of his ruggedly handsome face reawakens the desire Henrietta thought she had buried deep inside. Her body still yearns for his touch, but she’s determined not let him wound her again . . . not this time.
For Alexander, honor always comes first. But only now does he realize that when given the choice between two virtuous deeds, he picked the wrong one. On the run with his life in tatters and a pair of daughters in tow, Alexander burns for Henrietta. He knows he does not deserve forgiveness. And yet he longs to wrap his arms around her warm body once again. What’s more, he is sure the lady craves the same.
This is the first book a new series: The Eton Boys Trilogy
Ah, Henrietta...she's mad! And she should be. She was betrothed and then he went off to India to make his fortune...and...he married someone else. Didn't even break it off with her. She just heard gossip about it, then the truth was there. Oh, yes...she's mad. So when he shows up, injured after barely surviving a shipwreck on his aunt's doorstep, she really wants to smack him. Then to find out he has children, insult added to injury. She really doesn't want to feel badly for him when she discovers his wife has died. Dang it...she really doesn't. AND she doesn't want to like his daughters, either. But she does.
That's because, even with all of her spunk and sass, she's a nice person. Really gets her goat that Alexander is a nice guy, too. And she still loves him.
Alexander IS a nice guy. A gentleman who is appalled that he keeps sneaking around dark corridors wanting to put his lips on Henrietta. Yes, that happens a time...or four.
There's some mystery here. Death has been dogging Alexander's heels and he's not sure why. There are several people that could be the bad guys, too. Kept me guessing.
I enjoyed the children in this book, but wanted to smack Alexander for the way he treated his eldest. He, at least, when it was pointed out to him, tried to break years' of habit and tried to treat them the same. I wanted to hug little Helena, and was glad Henrietta was there for her.
Alexander's aunt...whoa...what a termagant! And she was fun. She and the cat!
This was a great way to spend a few hours reading. I will be reading more by Ms. Macnamara in the future.
