In a captivating novel spiced with holiday magic—perfect for fans of Rachel Gibson, Susan Mallery, and Molly O’Keefe—a rugged Montana man mends a Northeast girl’s jaded heart.
Boston veterinarian Hayley Scampini tends the city’s pampered pets but dreams of the rural life of a country vet. She’s single and determined to stay that way, convinced that love isn’t permanent enough to trust. Then a vacation to the Whisper Creek dude ranch introduces her to Daniel McKee, a sexy single dad who runs the kind of veterinary practice she aspires to—and rattles her conviction to keep men at a distance.
Managing a thriving practice, coping with the loss of his wife, and fighting a custody battle with his in-laws over his twin daughters, Daniel couldn’t be more overwhelmed. Hayley is a godsend, accompanying him in the field and winning over his girls. It doesn’t take Daniel long to realize he’s falling for this woman, hard and fast. So before Hayley returns to Boston, he extracts a promise: that she will return to Whisper Creek for Christmas. It’s the perfect time and place to show Hayley that the promise of a beautiful life together is something she can believe in.

This was a charming read that centers around a widowed country vet, his two darling girls, and a city vet...a group of people that really need each other.
Hayley worked hard to get through school and her uncle helped pay her way. He has retired and given her his practice, which consists of show dogs and cats. Small, snippy, over-bred little beasties...and their over-bearing owners. One wants her puff ball to be dyed purple! What Hayley wants is to work with horses and cows and sheep...big animals, but she feels tied to the practice her uncle has gifted her with.
She is so ready for her coming break as she heads to Montana for her best friend's wedding. If she finds a hot cowboy to help her enjoy the week, so much the better! She's not looking for a commitment, only a bit of fun. Because of something from her past, she's a "love'em and leave'em" type of gal.
When she meets the local big animal vet, widowed Daniel, he might just fit the bill. That's before she discovers he has two charming daughters. A ready-made family is not in her plans, no matter how cute the girls are. And Daniel, too!
Daniel has his own issues, as his in-laws are demanding more time with their granddaughters. They want full custody! Yes, I really disliked his MIL.
Time passes and we get to see these two fight their attraction for various reasons. It read real as they slowly came to terms with each other. Christmas arrives and we get to see just what a Cowboy Promise is all about.
I enjoyed this very much. Cute kids, horses...and a sweet cowboy who sweeps that city vet off her feet. A very nice way to spend an afternoon cuddled up with a book.
