Kerrick has tried to see his best friend’s sister-in-law as a younger sister. But just when he realizes his feelings for her go much deeper than friendship, duty compels him to court another woman.
It is supposed to be a brief courtship in name only, but outside forces seem determined to see Kerrick married to that other woman and to keep him and Catherine apart.
I read the first book in this series, Loving the Marquess, and really enjoyed it. I was pleased to receive a copy of Beguiling the Earl from the author. Kerrick was a great hero. He was honorable and in a hard place due to a debt he owes to a fellow spy. Just when he was ready to court Catherine in earnest, he has to pretend to court another woman.
Catherine wasn't all that pleased with the arrangement, either! Especially since she really likes Rose, who is her competition to everyone looking in. AND Rose has an "understanding" of long standing, to back her role in the eyes of the ton. Her parents are pushing for an engagement. Her father particularly. Rose was a spectacular supporting character and will be the star of the next book.
I truly hate the trope of people not talking which brings about hurt feelings and misunderstandings. Especially when a few words would clear things up. That is not the case here. Kerrick doesn't let that happen, thankfully! And Catherine, while young, has a good head on her shoulders.
They have to find a way through and over several obstacles in their path to happiness. Some of those things aren't totally cleared up by the end of the book. I'm pretty sure they'll be cleared in the next book of the series.
One thing that bothered me, Kerrick knows how much Catherine's BIL cares for her. How protective he is of her. I'm not sure why Kerrick didn't clue him in over the fact that this really horrible man is stalking her. Nicholas needs to know.
Other than that small issue, I thoroughly enjoyed the adult way these two carried on. It was refreshing to read! Now...I need that next book! The one with Rose and her Duke!
Thank you, Suzanna Medeiros, for the opportunity to read this book.
